Over Memorial Day 2022, I spent some time getting to know the streets of New
York City as Mae Foley, a new policewoman in the 1920s and 1930s, would have
known them as part of my research for The Girls Who Fought Crime.

I saw the locations for speakeasies, the route she would have walked along Broadway, learned about the construction of Rockefeller Center, and, of course, Grand Central Station.

At the New York Public Library, I discovered the 1933 training program for the New York Police Academy. Jiu Jitsu was definitely a required course!
